Surface functional nanofiber membrane for ultra-sensitive and naked-eye visual detection of bacterial concentration

Abstract: Bacteria contamination in water is serious health risk to human beings, so it is very important to realize the point-of-care (POC) bacteria detection in water. However, the traditional bacteria detection methods are time-consuming, and professional and equipment dependence, which don't meet the needs of POC detection. There are pressing need to develop platform for POC bacteria detection to defeat the increasing risk of bacterial infections. Herein, a surface functional nanofiber membrane (NFM) is prepared by layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly as platform for POC detection of bacterial concentration, it’s naked-eye visualization and ultra-sensitive. The platform has obvious bacterial responsiveness, which realized naked-eye visual bacterial concentration detection (102~106 CFU/mL) within 30 min and could detect the bacterial concentration (101~106 CFU/mL) by fluorescence within 5 min quantitatively. The platform not only has high efficiency but also has low threshold for bacterial concentration detection. Furthermore, the platform has good consistency with traditional methods in the detection of practical water samples, which has the potential use to detect bacteria concentration in water supplies to protect human beings form health risk. And, the work also provide useful reference for bacteria detection research, taking advantage of the surface characteristics of bacteria and the high sensitivity of NFM.
